Workshops

The IPRC offers a wide variety of workshops in creative writing, printmaking, bookarts, graphic design, and other topics related to independent publishing. Our workshops are designed to equip members with the skills and knowledge to make full use of the IPRC Studio resources. We strive to create non-intimidating spaces to learn and connect with other writers and artists.

All of our programming is offered at suggested sliding scale pricing or by donations. Your support helps us to continue offering accessible creative programming

Visit our calendar to view a full list of workshops and events.

Printmaking Workshops

We offer group introductory printmaking workshops once a month. Completion of our these workshops (or equivalent experience) is required for access to the IPRC’s riso, screenprinting & letterpress print studios. Learn more about our monthly offerings below.

  • This 4-hour course introduces participants to the basics of risograph (riso) printing. Leave with an understanding of how to use this print technology to create zines, fliers, posters, or other printed matter. While this technology is not new, riso printing has recently become one of the most exciting developments in independent printing and publishing because of its cost-effectiveness for print runs between 25 and 1,000. Workshop participants will learn how to best maximize the many quirks of riso printing to achieve striking results.

  • Join us to learn about silkscreen printing! Learn how to create stencils, prep and process screens while gaining knowledge about tools, tips, and tricks for the photo emulsion process. You’ll have the chance to acquire best practices for setting up your print station, printing and registration while gaining practice with the medium.

  • Learn to set moveable type and print on table top and poster presses in this two-day workshop. You’ll learn the vocabulary of printing and typesetting while getting a feel for this beautiful and historic process. Gain access to IPRCs collection of over 150 fonts of lead and wood type. Leave the class with a printed card and the satisfaction that comes with using 100 year old equipment!

Community Nights

In addition to workshop offerings we also host a variety of drop-in community nights. These are free and open to the public. Visit our calendar to view upcoming events.

  • Materials and glue sticks provided! Hosted on the first Sunday of every month.

  • Join us for an afternoon of drawing in a low-stakes environment. Activities range from still life drawing to group drawing games, or sit back and draw at your own pace. Bring your favorite notebook and a friend! Hosted on the third Sunday of every month.

  • PDXCC is a monthly gathering where participants make and share analog correspondence in the great mail art tradition of Ray Johnson and Anna Banana: art and conversation through the mail. This uniquely democratic, DIY art form incorporates writing, drawing, collage, rubber stamps, faux postage, decorative tape, typewriters – anything goes, as long as it goes through the mail. Hang out, skill share and send the glorious results through the mail. Monthly events hosted every third Tuesday by the Portland chapter of the Correspondence Co-op.

Basic materials will be on hand (scissors, glue sticks, envelopes), but you’re encouraged to bring whatever materials fuel your creative spirit.

  • Bring your favorite notebook and pen or pencil and join us for a monthly drop-in creative writing community event, with light facilitation, creative writing prompts, and opportunities to share your work. Writing Nights meets on the first Sunday of every month and is free and open to the public thanks to support from The Multnomah County Cultural Coalition.
