Learn to set movable lead type and print on a table-top handpress in the IPRC print shop. You'll learn the vocabulary of printing and typesetting while getting a feel for this beautiful and historical process. Leave class with a printed card and the satisfaction that comes with using 100 year old equipment! Come to class with small quotes or ideas for words to print. Successful completion of this class allows IPRC members access to open studio print hours so you can keep on printing!

The Print Gocco is a small, easy-to-use, self-contained printing machine. Using this simple screenprinting method, you can produce prints on paper or fabric. The workshop covers original preparation, screen exposure and printing. You can make multiple amazing and professional-looking postcards and more! Once trained you can use the IPRC's Print Goccos anytime.

Need some inspiration for your own personal book/zine projects? Or just looking for some general knowledge about the bookmaking process? If so, then this is the thing for you. In this workshop, we will learn about different book structures, bookbinding terminology, while viewing a selection of different book projects.

Learn the basics of zines: how to do it and why you should with seasoned zinester Marc Parker. Participants may even make their own practice zine on the spot. [A zine is a self-published journal or magazine that is often photocopied.]

Artist Talk: Justin "Scrappers" Morrison "Stay Wild or Beginner's Luck (at IPRC)
Free
At the closing party of his amazing art installation CAMP, Scrappers will give a talk on making art and making a living. Some themes he will discuss: staying wild, exploiting your cultural significance, brands are personalities with a message, everyone is an artist, the importance of doing it your damn self, optimistic losers always win, not keeping all your eggs in one basket, getting to the point, fun is sexy, and being resourceful. He'll also talk about his self-published book CAMP. Show extended until Sept 26.

Adventure Zine (for youth) (at IPRC)
Cost: $5
Want to create a cast of characters from scratch and send them on a unique adventure? Students in this workshop will write, illustrate and then go home with their own self-published adventure story. Age Level: 10-15

Zines and the Law (at IPRC)
Cost: Free, Limited space, must pre-register
Learn about copyright law and contract issues as they related to self published zines from an attorney specializing in publishing and arts law who is also a Zine fan and independent press advocate. We'll address some of the very complex legal issues with self publication and where, how and when concepts of fair use of copyrighted material and free speech apply. Bring questions, and we'll bring coffee & donuts. Pre-registration required, space is limited.

Marketing Your Craft (at IPRC)

We may have mixed feelings about advertising in our media-saturated world, but if you're not marketing your own craft you're really missing out. Learn to develop the fifteen magical words that tell people what you do. This workshop covers marketing basics, free and cheap resources, blogs, e-mail newsletters and print advertising.

Beginning Bookbinding (at IPRC)
Cost: $25/$40.($5 off when registering for Book Arts 101 at the same time)
Learn to sew simple books. In this workshop we will cover a variety of pamphlet sewing techniques that will help to build a foundation for future book and zine projects. Learn about some of the handiest bookbinders' tools and get to use them. By the end of class, each student will walk away from class with samples to help guide them in future projects.

How to Build and Promote a Website (at IPRC)

Open to anyone interested in learning how to build an attractive portfolio website using free services that already exist on the web. The class will explore basic web concepts such as HTML, CSS, and blogging, as well as provide tips on how to get people interested in visiting your new web home.

Put down the glue sticks and scissors and learn a page layout and print design software program that allows you to create and deliver printed documents or multipage books that are both attractive and effective. Basic knowledge of Mac OS and other Adobe programs or Quark helpful. Topics include setting up your document, overview of different tools and menu options, importing and sizing images, working with text, creating stylesheets and basic exporting for print.

Shannon Buck of Loaded Hips Press and Carye Bye of Red Bat Press present a joint show of small prints (lino-cut, woodblock, and mixed media). Using our excellent community letterpress print shop resources, these two small presses got their start right here in the IPRC, and launched their own small businesses making and selling prints. This show will tell their story, process, and show a collection of prints from each press.

This workshop will be structured as a show and tell informational session to help you map out ways to fund your awesome project. Topics will touch on: event planning (from auctions to benefits shows) and organizing, PR a-b-c's, and how to get others on board and keep the steam going.

Japanese Bookbinding: Accordions and Albums (at IPRC)
Cost: $30/$45, $2 materials fee
Explore the world of Japanese Accordion books. From the basic "folded scroll" to Nori-ire gajo (Japanese Album) these seemingly simple structures offer fascinating sculptural possibilities and is a great way to experiment with the combination of form, image and text.

Ever wonder what happens to that email or postcard you sent to an Art Director hoping for some work? This workshop will give you the opportunity to actually see "the stack" of promotional materials that an Art Director sees each day, and uncover the pitfalls and successes of the self-promotion game. In addition, the workshop will thoroughly review lesser-known marketing techniques that will actually encourage a response from the people that you are trying to reach.

In this workshop you'll learn the basics of writing a press release, you'll go home with a template you can use to make press release writing a snap! Plus learn how to contact reporters and who to contact, following up, and how to get really great stories with photos, interview techniques and more!

Artists and Zinesters, edit your writing so it's worth reading with the help of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style and by using your own ear. Xtra Tuf zine editor and journalism school dropout Moe Bowstern will share basic tips to help you create clear, active narratives that tell your stories the way you lived them. Bring an open heart and a willingness to challenge yourself.

Advanced Print Gocco: 4 topics in 4 hours (at IPRC)
Cost: $40/$60. Material's Fee $10
Students work in groups on the "project of the hour." Hour one: eliminating dropouts and blotchiness in your prints; hour two: multicolor registration, print on larger formats (larger than 4"x 6"); hour three: open screenprinting; hour four: print with your food (and eat it too)! Pre-req: Print Gocco Basics or equivalent.

Write-off: Ghost Stories (at IPRC)
Cost: Free
Join us for our second ever writing contest, and come prepared to write about Ghosts. In a series of short and incredibly fun events, we'll draw several spooky genres from a hat and then let you write your brains out on the subject of Ghosts. Moe Bowstern of Xtra Tuf and Justin Hocking will be your co-hosts, and a panel of judges will award prizes for the most terror-ific writing. If this event is anything like our Year of the Rat Write-off last February, we guarantee a very entertaining evening. Contest begins at 7:30 pm.

Advanced InDesign (at IPRC)
Cost: $30/$45.
Increase your InDesign efficiency and learn professional page layout tricks. Create long documents quickly using multiple Master Pages and multifile books. Libraries, Bezier drawing tools, tables, advanced typography techniques, an in-depth use of color and an introduction to pre-press features and trapping are also covered.

Coptic Bookbinding (at IPRC)
Cost: $30/$45.
This workshop will cover a basic Coptic (open-bound and stitched) book structure from start to finish. Students will learn to assemble and sew, and will leave with a finished book. Supplies will be provided but bring any of your own special papers or materials.

Selling Handmade on Etsy (at IPRC)
Cost: Free, limited space must pre-register.
Learn and share tips on selling your zines or handmade art online. Etsy is an online community of shops that is easy to use, and a great way to network and market anything made by you! This info session is informal, and will help you get started or keep going. Pre-registration required, space is limited.

Benefit: Text Ball "Figures of Speech" (at Leftbank Building)
Cost: $5 - $15.
The Text Ball is Portland's unique celebration of all things text, where attendees are encouraged to come dressed with text as part of your evening attire. The theme for this year's ball is "Figures of Speech." As a preface to the Text Ball, come early for a post-Wordstock cocktail hour from 6-7pm, including live music, snacks and a silent auction/art show. The Text Ball proper will commence at 7pm and last until 11pm. Both the cocktail hour and Text Ball take place at the Leftbank Building, just across the street from Wordstock! 240 North Broadway/p>

In this two-session workshop, publishing-industry veteran Justin Hocking will lead a discussion about an exciting new genre: the micro-memoir. He'll also give tips on getting published, but more importantly he'll help you publish your own writing in a zine/chapbook. We may also create our own personalized covers using a Print Gocco machine! Meets in two sessions: Nov 11 and Nov 18.

Learn how to create the classic clam-shell box, the ideal way to store a collection of zines or a special edition book on its own. Not only will we be learning the basics of building and covering a small box, but we will also be collaborating on making miniature zines/chapbooks to fit perfectly inside!

Dream Zine for Bilingual Youth (at IPRC)
Cost: $5
Make your dreams into a book! Students in this workshop will tell the stories of their dream worlds. Using collage, drawing, and Spanish/English or any other dual language, students will blur the line between fantasy and reality. We will string the individual dream tales into a collective dream zine that will be copied, bound, and sent home with each student. Age Level 8-13.

Learn the ropes of being a freelance illustrator. This workshop will explore contracts, pricing, portfolios/tear sheets, printing reproductions and preparing files for press. You will leave with the tools to attract clients, get press and create revenue.

Print-on-Demand: Pros & Cons (at IPRC)

A panel of authors will share their experiences with print-on-demand publishing companies. They hope to help participants decide if this is a good way to publish their own projects. Pre-registration required, space is limited.
Facilitators: Teresa Bergen, Jenny Gallagher and Dudley Clark
Teresa Bergen writes fiction and nonfiction, and published her novel Killing the President last year. Jenny Gallagher is a life coach and yoga teacher, and author of Four Steps to a Better Life. Dudley Clark is co-founder of About Time Publishing, and the author of several books, including Apocalyptic Crawfish.
